A SMS (sustainability management system) allows for systematic internal review, monitoring and corrective actions for continual improvement.

This workshop meets on-line on Wednesdays (October 8, 15, 22, 29) 2014

Management systems are the key to ongoing progress. A SMS (sustainability management system) allows for systematic internal review, monitoring and corrective actions for continual improvement.

ISSP's workshop will walk you through the creation of such a system to fit your needs.  You don't need a third-party certified ISO 14001 management system to benefit from the Plan-Do-Check-Act framework. You will learn what level of sophistication works best for you and what elements to add as your system matures. You will complete the workshop having learned practical methods to solidify and advance sustainability efforts by applying proven management system tools, practices and competencies.

This course prepares sustainability professionals at any level in the organizational hierarchy to lead an organizational change to a sustainable enterprise. It connects the dots between timeless leadership practices and how to transform an organization to a sustainability culture. At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Lead the integration of sustainability into their organization, using a seven-step sustainability change process.
2. Build an effective, relevant business case to support their company’s transformation to being a sustainable enterprise.
3. Be able to apply effective change leadership practices during the sustainability change process, capitalize on change paradoxes, and avoid potential derailers of their initiatives.
4. Help others be more effective sustainability champions.

This workshop meets on-line on Mondays (November 5, 12, 19, 26) 2012 at 4:00pm Pacific Time for 60 to 90 minutes.

Gain an understanding of the scope, challenges and possibilities in applying life cycle assessment to decision-making processes.

This is an introductory course on life cycle assessment. Participants will learn the steps involved and complete a simple life cycle assessment in a business simulation and gain an understanding of the scope, challenges and possibilities in applying life cycle assessment to decision-making processes.  Participants will also be introduced to the emerging application of LCAs to support Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) based on Product Category Rules (PCRs).

This is a great introductory course for sustainability professionals:

  • wondering if LCA would be a good field to get into
  • who may need to hire a firm to do a detailed LCA and need to know enough about the process to manage the project
  • need to understand LCA to produce Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), especially those interested in having their products eligible for LEED credit points in the building and construction industry,
  • who need an introduction to LCA before taking the 'deep dive' into the certification training.

We will not cover commercial LCA software tools such as SimaPro and GaBi and is not sufficient to pass the American Center for LCA (ACLCA), LCA Certified Professional (LCACP) exam (http://www.lcacenter.org/certification.html).

Your online course experience, from pre-work to deliverable completion, is June 1 through 30.  The course is delivered online and via the Internet so you participate from your computer for both the live weekly webinars and for the 24/7 online 'classroom' experience. Successful completion of this course can be applied towards an elective credit for the ISSP Sustainability Professionals Certificate.
